Alee: add first introduction

Skins is a major feature in ShiftOS, it was first introduced in 0.0.7 Alpha 1. Skins are special files which contain Shifter options. These options are automatically applied once the Skin Loader is used with the .skn file of the skin.

Overview
A typical Skin consists of a desktop background, title bar colours, window button alignment and colors, panel colors and a font. Skins are often extracted from an actual operating system and then set up to work with ShiftOS. This process is called "ripping".

Skin sharing
Once someone finishes work on their ShiftOS Skin, they upload it as an .skn file to a file hosting service (either a normal one, such as SendSpace or one which is made explicitly for Skins, such as SKNUpload). After the file is uploaded, the Skin creator usually posts a thread with the link to it on the Forums. People then download the .skn file from the hosting service, copy it to their ShiftOS directory and finally, apply it using Skin Loader. The user Kiwi7 attempted to simplify this process by creating a system called Quick Skin Downloading, which downloaded the Skin directly to the ShiftOS directory immediately after clicking a special link. However, this system wasn't very well received by the ShiftOS community due to people having to create special links.

Skin Loader
Skin Loader is a ShiftOS tool which allows users to create or view .skn files and alter the appearance of the game using them. Skin Loader consists of a preview of a window and the desktop with the current Skin applied to them and four buttons: "Close", "Load Skin", "Save Skin" and "Apply Skin". The first button closes the program without taking any action. The second one loads a .skn file into the program and updates the previews accordingly, while the third one saves the current appearance of ShiftOS as a .skn file. The last button applies the currently loaded .skn file onto ShiftOS.

Skin Shifter
Skin Shifter is a ShiftOS program which can periodically change the appearance of the game using a set of .skn files. Three options are available in this program: "Shift Interval", "Add Skin" and "Enable", which changes to "Disable" when the program is enabled. There's also the "Next Shift" label, which shows the time remaining to the next appearance change when the program is enabled. The option "Shift Interval" allows the user to change the time (in seconds) between appearance changes, while the button "Add Skin" can be used to import a .skn file which Skin Shifter will use. Clicking on a file path at the left side of the program's window allows the user to instantly switch Skins.

File Skimmer can be launched using either the Terminal or the App Launcher. Upon being launched, the program will display the contents of C:\ShiftOS. Folders can be opened by double-clicking the mouse. Upon opening a folder, File Skimmer will display its contents in the same window. The user can go back to the previous folder by selecting "Up a Level". Some folder may contain files. Double-clicking a file will open it in the associated program, for example double-clicking a ".pic" file will load it in ArtPad. The user can open the bottom menu by clicking the arrow at the bottom of the window to gain access to the "New Folder" and "Delete" features, with the latter only working when a file or folder is selected.

In reality, this was the game creating the C:\ShiftOS folder - the player's save file - and creating all the folders and files necessary for the in-game environment.
This filesystem format allowed the game to sandbox its filesystem outside of the host computer's. This meant that the player truly could not go above ShiftOS's root folder, a feature in 0.0.x.

Back around 2013, OSFirstTimer was doing his series on Arch Linux Adventures, which was supposed to be a journey from just a terminal to a fully graphical user interface with desktop features; he once had the idea to make that journey integrated as a real Linux distribution.

The idea was that ShiftOS was able to change the computing experience on every boot like the desktop environment, window manager, software, and the theme. A lot of software would be pre-installed, but it will randomly be selected every time when the person turns on their computer or when it is live when revealing it to the user.

He explained this on the Arch Linux forum, but most people were pretty critical of this. They thought it was too bloated as it would need to download a lot of packages every time it reboots the system, and they also have figured that he was too inexperienced with Linux distros as his ideas were too ambitious. So he decided to make his own game after realizing his distro idea alone won’t work.
The game starts off with the player's computer getting hijacked by DevX. The player is then informed that he was "involuntarily selected" to be an alpha tester for ShiftOS. The in-game computer's hard disk is then formatted with the fictional file system ShiftFS and ShiftOS is installed. After installation, DevX contacts the player with some basic information on how to use ShiftOS' command line.

Gameplay
After the opening sequence, the player gains the ability to use the in-game operating system's command line to open a basic set of programs, which show basic black and white graphics (aside from the Video Player and Web Browser). ShiftOS' virtual currency, Code Points, can be used in the Shiftorium to upgrade the operating system with new features (such as colors and the App Launcher) and additional software (such as TextPad and ArtPad). Code Points can be earned by playing minigames such as Pong, Knowledge Input or by customizing the operating system using the Shifter.

Bitnote exchange rate
In 0.0.8, players could exchange Codepoints for Bitnotes after unlocking the Shiftnet. For every 24 Codepoints given away to the Bitnote Shiftnet site, the player would gain one Bitnote - allowing them to buy programs and services off sites like Appscape.

Earning Codepoints
Codepoints would be earned by doing almost anything in ShiftOS. The most effective way to earn Codepoints was Pong, which soon became a meme in the community as ShiftOS would soon become Pong Simulator 2032 during 1.0's development.

Other ways of earning Codepoints included getting 10 items right in Knowledge Input, customizing the OS in Shifter, writing long documents in TextPad, and drawing pictures in ArtPad.

The amount of Codepoints earned, and the effort required, would depend on what the player is doing and how the program they are using is written.

ShiftOS was a game developed by Philip Adams and other developers. The original goal was to go from a bare terminal to a graphical user interface with full desktop features.

History

Plot

Alee: added history

ShiftOS was a game developed by Philip Adams and other developers. The original goal was to go from a bare terminal to a graphical user interface with full desktop features.

History

Plot
